ゲッツは、フィラデルフィアのハーレムでユダヤ系ウクライナ人移民の家庭に生まれる。13歳の頃、父に買ってもらったサックスで演奏を始めた。16歳頃からバンドに参加し、スタン・ケントン、ジミー・ドーシー、ベニー・グッドマンの各楽団で活躍した。1940年代後半に、ウディ・ハーマン第二期モダン・オーケストラにおける組曲「サマー・シーケンス」の最終章「初秋」の名演を皮切りに、自身のクールな感性の叙情味あふれる表現力とサウンドでクール・ジャズを代表するテナー・サックス奏者として知られるようになる。
